I love books. As a life-long learner, I have always been an avid reader, and both my physical and digital bookshelves are overflowing! I typically read dozens of books every year, as well as consume countless articles, newsletters, podcasts, and TED Talks.
One of the many content creators whom I follow is Dan Miller, author of the best-selling book 48 Days to the Work (and Life) You Love. Recently, Miller wrote about his own love for reading and his long-standing habit of reading 50 to 80 books per year (wow)!
However, Miller went on to reflect on this practice of reading copious amounts of new books every year, questioning the balance of quantity and quality. He then posed this question:
“What if you had to select 5 books you’re going to re-read this year? Not new books that are hot off the press, but 5 important books that have had a huge impact on your life—and sit down with them again, to go deep and absorb them…….slowly.”
While I have definitely re-read many, many excellent books over the years, I love this idea of carefully and intentionally selecting 5 important books each year to re-read. I am going to commit to doing this, and suggest you do the same! I haven’t narrowed down my next 5 re-reads yet, but off the top of my head, I’m considering…
- The Bible
- The Greatest Success in the World by Og Mandino
- The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino
- Wooden on Leadership by John Wooden
- As a Man Thinketh by James Allen
- The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
- The Ten Commandments for Business Failure by Donald Keough
- The Go-Giver by Bob Burg
… as well as my own two books, Presidential Leadership and Be An Inspirational Leader, as they also contain great truths and memories!
How about you, which 5 books would you re-read this year? Share a few suggestions in the comments!
