Schedule Intentional Time to Count Your Blessings

My mother, sister, and me, circa 1952.

A couple months ago I made time to take a short trip out of state to visit the gravesite of my parents. I wanted to use the time to reflect on their lives and legacy and the indelible impact they had on me and each of my siblings.

After arriving at the cemetery and paying my deepest respects at my parents’ graves, I sat down in front of the gravesite and called each of my three living siblings. I had a wonderful hour-long conversation with each sibling, focused on beautiful memories and the many things we cherish and respect most about our parents and the incredible, positive contribution they made to our lives.

Afterward, while still at the cemetery, I took some time to think through and write down a listing of some of the important things for which I am most grateful about my parents and their legacy. This is a list which I have committed to keep and frequently review and add to for as long as I live.

Any positive contributions I may have made throughout my career and life are a direct result of the positive impact of my parents, their character, and their example! There is no question of their huge role in shaping my own life and legacy. Growing up we had little money or nice things, but we had other things far more important!

That special trip out of state and day spent at my parents’ final resting place proved to be one of the most engaging, inspiring, and empowering days of my life! I highly recommend intentionally scheduling time to reflect on and honor the legacy of those who have made a lasting, positive impact in your life.

Whether it’s a gravesite visit, an in-person visit, a phone call or letter, or simply some time alone to think and reflect over cherished memories and express your gratitude in writing, make the time and do it! I promise you, it’s worth every minute and penny spent!
