You Did Not Get Here On Your Own

Awhile back I saw and shared the following image on social media, which shows two photos of renowned basketball coach John Wooden side by side with basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (formerly known as Lew Alcindor). The two photos were taken decades apart, and are accompanied by the caption: “Never forget those who helped & guided you.”

The late coach Wooden was not renowned merely for the number of basketball games his team won or the championships he lead his team to—though he certainly won a lot; he was renowned and admired for his leadership and character both on and off the court. Wooden was truly one in a million; a priceless gentleman, husband, father, and leader. He was a phenomenal leader and coach, but an even better man and human being!

I love the above image and the priceless message and wisdom it conveys, not only because it honors coach Wooden, but because it also honors the basketball player, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Abdul-Jabbar, like so many of his teammates and other players throughout the years, was greatly impacted by the example, help, and guidance of coach Wooden. As the above image portrays, he did not take this for granted, showing respect and care for coach Wooden even decades after their time together on court had ended.

What an important reminder and priceless wisdom for each and every one of us! “Never forget those who helped & guided you”—because I guarantee, you did not get here on your own!

Take some time right now to think about those who have supported, helped, and guided you toward success. Whether parents, friends, teachers, mentors, bosses, colleagues, or anyone else, undoubtedly there are people in your life who deserve recognition, respect, and thanks for the role they’ve played in your success.

If possible, reach out to them! A phone call, a handwritten note, or even an email or text could very well make their day. I am eternally grateful to those who have helped me along the way, and I am also very thankful that I had the chance to thank them before it was too late. If you have the opportunity, I urge you to do the same, or find another way to honor their memory. Don’t wait!
