As I wrote in my book, “leadership is not limited by titles or hierarchy,” and “true inspirational leadership is more a matter of character than achievement.”
So What Does It Really Mean to Be An Inspirational Leader?
You’ve heard it said that leadership is influence, and it’s true. Inspirational leaders positively influence and deeply impact those they lead. They use their leadership roles to inspire, to change lives, and to leave lasting legacies.
I believe my colleague, healthcare leader Geoff Brenner describes inspirational leadership very well:
“We all have a deep sense of what good leadership looks like, but unfortunately we would probably agree it is rarely observed. In most cases it has less to do with a technical mastery and more to do with emotional intelligence, intellectual courage, and a deeply sacrificial posture that understands that true leadership is being an effective member of a team, sweating and bleeding along with everyone else, and not a captain in a nicely pressed uniform pointing to the horizon while others row.”
Did you catch that? Inspirational leaders don’t just point the way, they labor alongside those they lead. There’s nothing quite as powerful or influential as serving side by side with those you lead. So if you desire to be a truly inspirational leader, you better grab an oar and row!
