I recently saw this quote (origin unknown) posted as a meme on social media: “When this is over, let’s remember that it wasn’t the CEOs & billionaires who saved us. It was the janitors, nurses, grocery and food workers.”
I understand the intent of that post and I applaud it. If you ever doubted the value of these roles in our world, I’m betting you have recently sat up and taken notice! There is definitely no doubting now how much we all depend on the people who keep things clean, care for us when we’re sick, and provide and prepare the food we buy.
One thing is for sure, when the world gets turned upside down, it definitely gives you a new (or renewed) perspective! Personally,
- I am in awe of the doctors, nurses, administrators and all healthcare workers putting in countless hours treating patients, cleaning facilities, managing hospitals and keeping our health system running in the midst of this crisis.
- I have a new respect for grocery store workers and all the links in the supply chain who are doing their very best to keep shelves stocked with food and necessities.
- I am incredibly grateful for the farmers and ranchers who produce crops and raise livestock to provide food for our wonderful country.
- I applaud the millions of teachers and educators who have adapted and innovated at the drop of the hat in order to continue giving their best to their students even from a distance.
- I no longer take for granted the simple pleasures of going to the gym, eating at a restaurant, attending a church service, meeting up with friends, and a dozen other “normal” activities that have recently been put on hold.
How has your perspective changed? What (or who) do you no longer take for granted?
While we may be noticing the impact of industries and individuals we never gave much thought to before, the fact is, in the midst of this crisis we need everyone. We need each other. We need both superb leadership and direction as well as superb frontline team members. We really need each and every dedicated member of the team—from the C-suite leadership to the frontline workers and everyone in between.
Remember, no matter who you are or what your role is right now, you too can do your part to make a difference. I’d love to hear how you’ve adapted and how you’ve found ways to lead and serve during this global pandemic—share your perspectives!
