We often work through the week eagerly anticipating the weekend, but then instead of using the weekend to relax, we carry work home with us. We check emails, spend hours planning, answer calls, and so much more.
I recently came across an article titled, “How Successful People Spend Their Weekends,” by Travis Bradberry. The article points out a study done by Stanford that found “productivity declines sharply when the work week exceeds 50 hours, and it drops off so much after 55 hours that there is no point in working any more.”
This means this extra time that you are taking away from yourself (and your family) is essentially wasted. Bradberry continues to list 10 things successful people do “to find balance on the weekend:”
- “They wake up at the same time.” The temptation of the snooze button seems amplified on the weekend, but Bradberry states you should ignore it. The sleep schedule you have created through the week will work more effectively on Monday morning if you keep it through the weekend.
- “They designate mornings as Me time.” Since you are waking up at the same time but don’t have to get ready for work, find something to do that works for you—exercise, take a stroll, read, etc.
- “They schedule micro-adventures.” Bradberry states, “Knowing that you have something interesting planned for Saturday will not only be fun come Saturday, but it will significantly improve your mood throughout the week.”
- “They pursue a passion.” Make time for what you care about and pursue it. What are your hobbies? What relaxes you? Integrate these things into your weekend.
- “They disconnect.” Turn off your phone and shut off your electronics. Our culture has become utterly dependent on our devices and one of the best things you can do to relax is TURN THEM OFF!
- “They minimize chores.” While the weekend may seem like the opportune time to finish all the household chores you didn’t get to during the week, don’t fall into this trap. While some things can’t be avoided, try not to fill your weekend with endless tasks.
- “They exercise.” Whatever excuses you may have had during the week can be thrown out the window on the weekend. Make it a priority and exercise! Nothing matters if you aren’t around to see it. Take care of yourself.
- “They reflect.” Bradberry discusses how the weekend is a great time to reflect on the previous week, stating, “Without the distractions of Monday to Friday busy work, you should be able to see things in a whole new light.”
- “They spend quality time with family.” Don’t neglect your family. Spend focused time with them and intentionally plan to do things with your family.
- “They prepare for the upcoming week.” Take a moment to prepare for the week ahead. Nothing too extravagant. Just think about the things that need to get done and mentally prepare yourself for success.
Don’t cheat yourself out of this important time to relax, refresh, and be rejuvenated. Your weekend spent well can lead to a more productive week and just make life a little more enjoyable.
