Last week, we took a look at 6 important tips for scheduling for success. This week, I would like to dive deeper into the last of those 6 tips: the importance of staying healthy. Too often, we push aside our health in order to make time for what we deem more important to our success, but this is a mistake.

As I said last week, I have always valued my health, and this desire to stay healthy and fit has just increased through the years. It’s not easy and it takes work, but I believe the payoff is worth the effort. While time consuming, this pursuit of physical fitness is absolutely essential to my overall success.

I recently came across an article titled “The Relationship Between Physical Fitness and Financial Success,” and found the three points to be rather insightful. The article’s author, Stephanie Faris, references a study conducted in 2013 showing a correlation between physical fitness and students’ school performance. Faris speculates whether the same link exists in adults, and offers three reasons why physical fitness can lead to greater success:

  1. The Mental Benefit” – This is one of the main reasons I choose to do most of my work while remaining active. I’ve conducted countless phone meetings while riding my recumbent bike, and frequently use different iPhone features to work while on the go. Many people work out in the early morning because it releases endorphins and stimulates them for the day to come. Your body is in need of physical stimulation just as much as your mind!
  2. General Mindset” – January 1st is right around the corner, and soon everyone will be considering their New Year’s Resolutions. One of the top resolutions across the nation will be to work out more and/or to lose weight. The people who stick with their resolutions have a mindset of success. They have a determination that will come out not only in their pursuit to stay active, but in their career and personal lives as well.
  3. Less Missed Work Days” – Generally, the more fit you are, the healthier you stay. A healthy person has less sick days, meaning they are able to be more productive. This particular point was made to show the financial success to be gained by staying healthy. Being able to regularly go to work means more success!

When it comes down to it, your health impacts everything you do, and similar to your retirement account, it is something that needs to be invested in now. Make your health a priority and schedule time for yourself for greater personal and professional success!
