There is so much to be learned in this life, and oftentimes I don’t think I will get a chance to learn everything I want to learn. I operate under the premise that knowledge should be shared, and I continually embrace this philosophy through the different platforms and opportunities I am a part of today.

Mentors have played a huge part in my life and in the lives of the leaders I have had the opportunity to both work with and interview. If you truly desire greater success, then join the cycle of mentorship today. Find a mentor—or become a mentor—and start learning from others!

3 Pieces of Advice on Mentorship

Mentors have a lasting impact.

“My parents were the type of people that never told us we couldn’t do anything, they always told all three of us we could be whatever we wanted to be. They didn’t have the money to put us through college, but always expected it… [not going] wasn’t even an option for any of the three of us. And they didn’t settle for mediocrity in anything; if you did something, you had to give it your best, and you couldn’t quit mid-season… How my parents raised us was really the foundation of who I am today and how I lead today.”

Traci Bernard, president of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Southlake

Mentoring is beneficial to all involved.

“I have been very fortunate to work with people senior to me who were very kind to take me under their wing and give me insights that really have helped me in my career, and by the same token, I have had the opportunity to do the same for others. And I would tell you, from my perspective, I’ve learned equally from both [experiences].”

Bruce Brandes, founder and CEO of Lucro

Mentors should be chosen wisely.

“I am a big believer in mentoring and having a mentor. I think that one of the best things a leader can do is choose good mentors. But remember: What kind of advice you are going to get is based on whom you choose to be your advisor. So choose wisely.”

Joel Allison, CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health

Mentors are invaluable assets to anyone desiring greater success personally, professionally, and organizationally. Every bit of experience and advice they pour into you will not only help you succeed in your work today, it will benefit you for decades!
