In the grand scheme of life, you need both short-term and long-term vision to be truly successful. If you are only worried about the day-to-day, you lose the bigger picture. Likewise, if you are constantly focused on the bigger picture, the everyday moments are often lost in a sea of busyness, and small setbacks can be overwhelming. Knowing your end goal and strategically working day-to-day to accomplish that goal—in spite of obstacles and setbacks—is the key to success.

Johnny Carson wasn’t always an iconic TV star. Before landing the job as host of “The Tonight Show,” his career had many ups and downs. Early on in his pursuit, he had his own show for a time. Due to programming issues the show was cancelled. He had tasted the goodness of the limelight, and was soon left high and dry, hungrier than he had ever been.

Carson’s small town gigs led him to pursue a bigger dream in the entertainment industry. He loved performing. After leaving Omaha, Nebraska for the shining lights of Hollywood, Carson became increasingly aware that though he had big aspirations and a lot of ambition, he still faced an uphill climb to reach the top.

But this didn’t discourage him. In pursuit of a way to provide for his family, Carson was willing to take whatever job he could find in the entertainment industry. He even hosted a few game shows. This eventually led him to New York, where, after many years, he was given the opportunity to sub for the then current host of “The Tonight Show.” His performance was so well remembered that a few years later, when the position was open, he was asked to become the new host.

Johnny Carson’s road to the top was far from easy, but he always kept his eye on the bigger picture and actively worked toward his goal. While some positions may have seemed like a step back, he knew he was still on the right path.

What are you pursuing? What is your vision of success in your life? Are you strategically pursuing your goal? Every day, remind yourself of the end goal and then align your pursuits for the day accordingly. Don’t lose sight of your goal, and achieve your version of success—whatever that may be!
