Maybe it happens in every industry. I don’t know because I have not served as a CEO and senior executive in every industry. Of course, neither has anyone else.
However, I have served as a hospital and healthcare system CEO and senior executive for the past 40 years. Throughout this rather long and successful career, I have been continually amazed how many senior healthcare executives spend almost all of their personal, professional, and organizational development time and energy within the healthcare field.
Big mistake in my opinion.
Please do not misunderstand me. There are many excellent development resources within healthcare. I encourage you to actively and consistently engage in those that are most relevant to you, your values, your personal and professional mission, and your specific goals and objectives.
I also encourage you to actively and consistently engage in some of the many excellent developmental resources outside of the healthcare field. Broaden your horizons and perspectives. Broaden your understanding and experience regarding how personal and professional development is approached outside of healthcare. Better understand non-healthcare organizations and non-healthcare colleagues. Broaden your non-healthcare personal, professional and organizational networks. Access and learn from the very best, world-class resources regardless of industry!
Although your intentions may be good, by limiting and restricting your developmental time and energy to only the healthcare field, you are significantly limiting your personal, professional, and organizational potential, impact, and legacy.
Bust down whatever the barriers might be. Wisely, eagerly, and consistently learn from the best of the best, both within healthcare and outside of healthcare. You may be amazed, even astounded at what you are missing.
