Have you ever had a boss that you simply couldn’t stand? I’m sure we’ve all been there—unfortunately, “I hate my boss” is a far too common sentiment! But what about the opposite—have you ever had a boss whom you found it a pleasure to work for?
Sandy Morford, CEO of Renovo Solutions, has been described as just that—a boss who is a pleasure to work for. After hearing some great comments about Sandy from one of his direct reports, Anne Granum, VP of Strategic Business Development, I decided to interview him about his leadership style.
Within minutes of beginning the interview, I could tell that Sandy is a humble man. I asked him if he considers himself to be an inspirational leader, and he laughed, responding, “I think there have been other phrases and words that have been used to describe me besides ‘inspirational leader!’” But as the interview progressed, he went on to say, “At the end of the day, I do try to live my life as someone who inspires others to perform at their best.”
One way that Sandy inspires those he leads is by leading with great enthusiasm and passion. “Bottom line, I get excited about what I do.” Leading by example is absolutely critical, and that kind of enthusiasm is contagious.
Another key leadership trait Sandy tries to demonstrate is listening and responding sincerely to everyone in his organization; “Not just listening, but taking that input to heart, and really challenging my own thoughts as to my way of thinking about something… and then putting all of that together into action.”
By working with passion and enthusiasm, and by being attentive and responsive, Sandy Morford is certainly demonstrating leadership that inspires others.
