Turning a Loss into a Gain

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Every cloud has a silver lining.” This optimistic sentiment may not always be true, but there definitely are silver linings in a lot of difficult situations—if we choose to look for them.

Last September, one Atlanta family chose to create their own silver lining in the midst of a negative experience. When their daughter’s wedding was cancelled just 40 days before the event, Willie and Carol Fowler were left with a planned and paid for wedding reception and no reason to celebrate.

So what did they do? They created a new reason to celebrate, and turned what would generally be considered a big loss into an even greater gain.

The Fowler family kept their party plans but swapped the guest list, inviting 200 of Atlanta’s homeless men, women, and children to enjoy the four-course meal and live entertainment. The event was a huge success, and while it turned out nothing like the originally planned celebration, it is certainly an excellent example of one loss turned into a touching and memorable gain.

How about you, have you ever experienced a loss turned into a gain? What was your silver lining?
