Habits that are Holding You Back

We are in a study of Marshall Goldsmith’s excellent book, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful.  The book is relevant to all healthcare executives who desire even greater success in the future.

Goldsmith has a Ph.D in organizational behavior from UCLA and over 30 years of experience measuring and analyzing behavior in organizations.  He now applies his world-class knowledge, experience and wisdom one-on-one with very successful senior executives who want to be even more successful.

Goldsmith says his job is not to make these already successful executives smarter or richer.  As Goldsmith puts it:

  • “My job is to help them – to identify a personal habit that’s annoying their coworkers and to help them eliminate it – so that they retain their value to the organization.  My job is to make them see that the skills and habits that have taken them this far might not be the right skills and habits to take them further.

  • “What got them here won’t get them there!”

Goldsmith trains these already successful executives to behave more effectively in the workplace – by enrolling them in a “simple but brutal regimen.”

You are a creature of habit.  Your behavior, your time and your days are almost totally dominated and controlled by habit.  If you don’t believe or accept that… sorry Charlie… it is a fact of life for each and everyone of us… even the most successful and the least successful.

Next week we will discuss the “simple but brutal regimen” Goldsmith uses.  In the meantime, here is a question well worth your time and serious thought:

  • Which of your personal habits are annoying your coworkers and causing you to be less effective?

It doesn’t matter if you are “the boss” and don’t have to change.  If one or more of your habits is significantly annoying, bothering and ‘grating’ on others, that habit or those habits are reducing your current leadership effectiveness – and will continue to reduce your effectiveness in the future.

Address that habit or those habits now.  What Got You Here Will Not Get You There!

More on What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful next week.  Join the journey.
