4 Things You Can’t Recover

This past week I happened upon an inspirational quote that stuck with me as I went about my daily routine:

Four Things You Can’t Recover:

The stone after the throw

The word after it’s said

The occasion after it’s missed

The time after it’s gone.

This quote encouraged reflection on my life.  It caused me to stop and ponder just how many moments I may have thrown a stone or a hateful word, missed an occasion, and lost time. What have I lost because of these instances?  How would my life be different if I would have taken the time to consider my actions in the moment?

We make many mistakes, both personally and professionally, and it is important for us to be aware of these mistakes. We may not be able to recover the moments wherein we make these mistakes, but we must choose what we will do next.

The Stone and the Word

While most people are not roaming the halls tossing stones at one another, we do often act without thought. This can also lead to speaking without considering how the words will be received or who might be hurt.

“But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger.” – James 1:19

Imagine the moments that could be saved if we would daily follow this very practical advice. When you are slow to speak and slow to anger, your words are typically more edifying, and less stones are thrown.

Even though you cannot recover the moment, you can choose what happens next. So if you realize you have carelessly thrown a stone or a sharp word, be willing to humble yourself and apologize. Take the time to make amends and choose to be better in the future.

The Occasion and the Time

These moments are much harder to make up for in life. Over the last few weeks we have discussed the importance of work/life balance, and this quote amplifies the importance of this balance; don’t be fooled into thinking you will always have time later.

Stop acting as if life is a rehearsal. Live this day as if it were your last. The past is over and gone. The future is not guaranteed.

–Wayne Dyer

Make time for the moments in life that you don’t want to miss. Be with your friends, love your family, and embrace life to the fullest. An apology won’t bring back a missed moment. You must know your priorities and align your actions accordingly.

It is never too late to change. Whether you are 20 or 90, life still has many moments to offer you. So consider your actions, be slow with your words, enjoy the occasions, and utilize your time to the fullest.
