I read an excellent blog post yesterday from highly respected leader and author John Maxwell, and I couldn’t help but want to share it with you today. One line in particular really stood out to me:

“Leaders motivate themselves internally rather than depending on external incentives.”

Wow. That is such a great explanation of the distinction between true leaders and those who mostly just follow.

But are leaders always self-motivated? How do leaders maintain that kind of internal motivation that sets them apart from people who depend more upon external incentives?

Maxwell shares and explains three sources of self-motivation:

  1. Clarifying your vision
  2. Taking 100% responsibility for your life
  3. Charting a course for the future
