CEO Study: Capitalizing on Complexity

By Dan Nielsen

January 17, 2011

IBM recently released an extensive and very thought-provoking study titled “Capitalizing on Complexity.”  The study, conclusions and recommendation are based on face-to-face conversations with more than 1,500 CEOs worldwide.

If there was ever a time when healthcare leaders throughout America need to capitalize on complexity, it is now!  This study provides excellent food for thought, excellent content for discussion among leadership teams, and excellent examples regarding how to capitalize on complexity.  An outstanding leadership retreat could be built around this study and its conclusions and recommendations.

One of the benefits of this study for healthcare leaders, in my opinion, is that it is not focused strictly on healthcare.  It is based on the reality faced by organizations across the economic spectrum.  The 1,500 CEOs participants and the authors did not have an ‘insider’s view, personal bias, or political agenda’  regarding healthcare.  The focus and recommendations are based on the economic reality of the overall marketplace we face now… and in the future.

In the next couple of weeks, we will feature and discuss some of the specific conclusions and recommendations of this highly credible study.  For example, the extensive analysis found that CEOs of ‘standout organizations’ are capitalizing on complexity by focusing on three areas:

  • Embodying Creative Leadership
  • Reinventing Customer Relationships
  • Building Operating Dexterity

We will discuss each of these in detail as well as other conclusions and recommendations.  We will also discuss implications for healthcare leaders and the healthcare marketplace.

Stay tuned.  In the meantime, the study is available at no cost at http://ibm.com/ceostudy7.
