A Time of Unique Opportunity

By Dan Nielsen

In a recent issue of Fortune Magazine, Mark Hurd, CEO of Hewlett-Packard is quoted saying “Great companies excel in tough times, and in tough times customers turn to great companies.”  And so it is with successful people.  Great people… highly successful people… excel in tough times, and in tough times customers turn to great… highly successful people!

This particular issue of Fortune magazine, which focuses on the world’s most admired companies, makes the point in several articles that the really great companies… the world’s most admired companies… see the current economic environment as an opportunity to further solidify their strong presence and reputation, to reaffirm and recommit to their successful strategies and to increase marketshare.   These companies also see the current environment as an opportunity to build momentum and best position themselves for the inevitable economic recovery.

You and every other person who desires more success (however you define success) should be doing exactly the same thing.  Focus on the current economic environment as an opportunity to further solidify your presence and reputation, to reaffirm and recommit to your most successful strategies, and to increase the marketshare of that which you desire most in life.  Focus on the current environment as an opportunity to build personal and professional momentum and best position yourself for the inevitable economic recovery.

The same Fortune Magazine article states that Hurd is also thinking more about HP’s position within the industries and markets HP serves.  Not surprisingly, he’s benchmarking HP against the competition.  Hurd is quoted saying “The measure of great companies in this kind of environment is how you do, relatively speaking, within it… and how do you emerge stronger, relatively speaking, at the end of it?”

Likewise the measure of great people… people who want more success in this kind of environment… is how you do, relatively speaking, within it… and how do you emerge stronger, relatively speaking, at the end of it?

Separate yourself from the hoards of moaners and groaners during this very real and very difficult economic environment.  Take great comfort in the fact that great people… highly successful people… excel in tough times, and in tough times customers turn to great… highly successful people!  That means you, and others who consistently focus on personal and professional success and improvement have a distinct advantage in this economic environment.

Do whatever it takes to further solidify your presence and reputation, to reaffirm and recommit to your most successful strategies, and to increase the marketshare of that which you desire most in life.  Use this time to build your personal and professional momentum and to best position yourself for the inevitable economic recovery.

The future belongs to those who prepare for it!  I look forward to seeing you there… accomplishing, giving, serving, adding value and enjoying that which you most desire.  Make it happen.  No one else will make it happen for you!  See you there…
